A new pet is exciting and a little overwhelming, and the internet will happily sell you three hundred dollars of gear before they even get home. You need less than you think in week one. Here is the honest short list.
The real essentials
Food and a bowl, a place to sleep, and a way to keep them safe. For a dog that means a leash and collar; for a cat, a litter box and litter. Start with the food they were already eating, then transition slowly to something better once they have settled in.
Nice, but not day one
Toys, treats, beds, and grooming tools all matter, but they can come once you know your pet a little. You will learn fast whether you have a power chewer or a plush-toy carrier, a brush-tolerator or a glove-only cat. Buying after you know saves money and clutter.
Settle in slow
Keep the first days quiet. One room, a predictable routine, and plenty of patience do more than any gadget. When you are ready to dial in the food, come see us; we will help you read the labels and pick something that fits your new family member.
